"Man needs colour to live; it's just as necessary an element as fire and water."

- Le Corbusier

Le Corbusier was one of the most influential architects of the twentieth century, and his architecture, writings, and works of art continue to influence contemporary architecture. Colour, not surprisingly, was a consuming interest and a consistent focus of his attention. By the mid-1930s, he had recast the relationship in his architecture between colour and form. They are, he wrote, of equal importance:

"Polychromy is an architectural technique as powerful as the plan and the section. Better than that: polychromy is itself an element of the plan and the section."
